More wind turbine orders entrenches AMSC in India

By Kyle Alspach

American Superconductor Corp. is expanding deeper into India with an order from a new Indian firm for wind turbine electrical control systems.

The order – for 17 systems that will be deployed in 2-megawatt, doubly-fed induction wind turbines – came from Inox Wind Ltd., part of India’s Inox group of companies. A dollar figure for the order was not disclosed.

In April, Devens-based American Superconductor (Nasdaq: AMSC) announced a $20 million initial order for electrical control systems from India’s Ghodawat Energy Pvt. Ltd.

American Superconductor does most of its business in Asia. Seventy percent of its revenue came from Sinovel Wind Group Co., China’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, during fiscal year 2009, which ended March 31 for the company.

Overall, American Superconductor has reported that 87 percent of its revenue came from outside the U.S. in the recent fiscal year, compared to 84 percent and 74 percent in the prior two fiscal years.
