Stealthy startup Unacuna launches with hint of baby tech

By Galen Moore

Dr. Harvey Karp, the California-based pediatrician and author of parenting how-to book “The Happiest Baby on the Block,” is partnering with MIT Media Lab associate professor Deb Roy on a stealthy new startup called Unacuna LLC.

In a regulatory filing today, Unacuna reported receiving $250,000 from private investors – part of a planned $500,000 equity round. The company does not appear to maintain a website.

Reached by phone today, Karp declined to discuss the company’s plans. Roy could not be reached in time for this article. However, judging by Karp’s and Roy’s background, the company is likely related to some kind of infant care. Roy, who directs the Media Lab’s Cognitive Machines group, specializes in child language acquisition, among other areas.

The name “unacuna” is a “nonsense word,” Karp said. Translated from Spanish, the phrase “una cuna” means “a crib.”
