New military orders net $20M for iRobot

By Michelle Lang

Bedford’s iRobot Corp. has won a $20.3 million order for 125 PackBot Man Transportable Robotic System (MTRS) robots from the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). The order also includes spare parts and repairs for the PackBot MTRS.

The PackBot MTRS is derived from iRobot’s 510 PackBot, which are used in Iraq and Afghanistan to locate and deactivate explosive devices.

The company’s deal with NAVSEA is a standalone contract. Last August, iRobot reported a similar deal in which NAVSEA ordered $13.5 million in PackBot MTRSs, parts, accessories, add-ons, configuration management, training and repair services, to be used by any branch of the U.S. military.

IRobot (Nasdaq: IRBT) announced last month that its second quarter revenue jumped against the same period last year, driving the robotics company out of the red and into the black. Revenue for Q2 2010 was $97.8 million, versus $61.3 million in the second quarter of 2009.
