NEHI gets grant for remote patient monitoring tests

By James M. Connolly

The New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI) announced today that it was awarded a grant to test home-based monitoring equipment for elderly patients with chronic illnesses.

The $100,000 grant came from the Center for Technology and Aging, and was one of five awarded by the center nationally. The work is part of a Home Telehealth demonstration project, and will involve patients in the Boston area who have been hospitalized for congestive heart failure.

“This grant will enable NEHI to demonstrate how an important technology can make a significant difference in the quality of life for older adults with congestive heart failure,” said Wendy Everett, president of Cambridge-based NEHI, in a statement.

NEHI said that participants in the project will use a home telehealth device to collect data about their physical health and symptoms, and the device will then forward the information to the patients’ care team. NEHI is conducting the project in partnership with the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and Atrius Health.
