Billerica detection technology company American Science and Engineering Inc. said it has landed a $5.3 million follow-on order for its X-ray-based Z Backscatter Vans for a customs agency in an unnamed Latin American country. That adds to an $8.3 million order AS&E said it had received earlier this month for multiple ZBVs for the same Latin American customs organization.
The ZBV from AS&E (Nasdaq: ASEI) is an X-ray screening vehicle that unobtrusively screens other vehicles for car and truck bombs and is used in counterterrorist measures. Enclosing the technology in a van allows the scanners to be moved right to the point where the X-ray imaging detection of explosives or other contraband is most needed, according to company officials.
In June, AS&E reported it had won a $6.7 million order from the U.S. government for military trailer versions of its ZBV system. The order added to an April award valued at $34 million, bringing the total funded award to $40.7 million. The April announcement indicated that the 37 ZBV trailers ordered at the time were to be used by the U.S. Army for entry control points in Afghanistan.
With 395 employees as of March, AS&E reported a first quarter profit of $12.33 million, a solid jump from the $8.24 million profit of Q1 2009.
