Canada deal sparks Zoll’s Q3

By Rodney Brown

Zoll Medical Corp. saw a slight jolt in revenue for its third quarter of 2010, climbing to $111.3 million versus $95.1 million for the third quarter of 2009. Profit, however, spiked to $5.7 million for the quarter, against the $1.5 million in Q3 2009.

The boost in revenue was mostly due to sales of Chelmsford-based Zoll’s defibrillators and other resuscitation devices to the pre-hospital market -- the category that encompasses first-responders -- which jumped 26.6 percent year-over-year to $51.1 million.

According to Zoll chairman and CEO Richard Packer, the growth in the pre-hospital segment was driven in large part by a large shipment to Canada, which standardized the EMS system in Newfoundland on Zoll equipment.

A drop in the military segment of its hospital business brought the overall North American hospital market down 8 percent from Q3 2009.

In December of 2009, Zoll (Nasdaq: ZOLL) won U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for its Zoll E Series Monitor/Defibrillator with carbon monoxide monitoring.
