First Wind Holdings Inc. has received a $117 million federal loan guarantee for a wind power project in Hawaii, the U.S. Department of Energy announced Tuesday.
A subsidiary of the Boston-based developer, Kahuku Wind Power, received the loan guarantee to build and operate the 30-megawatt Kahuku Wind Power project, the DOE said. The project is expected to supply electricity for 7,700 homes and create more than 200 jobs.
In May, the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission approved a power purchase agreement between the project and the Hawaiian Electric Co.
First Wind previously built and currently operates Hawaii’s largest wind energy facility, the 30-megawatt Kaheawa Wind project in Maui.
In January, First Wind announced it had signed a deal to build dozens of wind turbines for a renewable energy project in upstate Maine. The Oakfield Wind project is expected to consist of 34 GE 1.5-megawatt turbines that would power more than 20,000 homes. First Wind has three other wind projects in development in Maine and operates six wind farms in the U.S.
