United Way honors Young Scientists and their mentors

The United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley honored the 2010 recipients of the Math, Science and Technology awards at Microsoft’s NERD Center in Cambridge, recognizing, among others, two Young Scientists of the Year. Sabrina Sahyouni, 12, of Lawrence and Claudeigh Decoline, 11, of Medford were chosen as 2010’s winners. Sahyouni was selected as a 2010 Young Scientist of the Year because of the enthusiasm she brought to experiments, particularly in the area of aerodynamics, United Way officials said. Decoline was selected as a 2010 Young Scientist of the Year because of her intellectual focus. This year, for the first time, United Way’s Math, Science and Technology initiative engaged high school students as science mentors to the youngest children in the program. The STEM Squad Mentor of the Year award went to Raul Casanova, 18, of Boston. In addition, United Way recognized a science club for its efforts, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Billerica. United Way’s initiative is a community partnership that engages kids in the sciences through hands-on learning in afterschool programs and at local science and tech companies. The initiative has grown significantly in recent years, doubling its size over two years to engage 1,300 youth. MSTi also evolved from engaging 8-to-12-year-olds to, this year, engaging kids from kindergarten up through 12th grade.
