The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center has placed 164 interns with 93 life sciences companies through its 2010 Internship Challenge, which aims to develop the state’s life sciences talent and also educate interns through hands-on experience. The number represents a 58 percent increase over 2009’s placement of 104 interns, according to a news release from the organization.
The interns – representing undergraduates, graduate students and recent college graduates from 46 colleges and universities – have been hired for 12 weeks this summer, earning a small stipend in the process. The companies, which interviewed and proactively selected their interns, represent pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices and contract research organizations.
The MLSC is reimbursing the student stipends at life sciences firms with fewer than 100 employees.
The MLSC is charged with spending $1 billion over ten years as part of Governor Deval Patrick’s Life Sciences Initiative, passed in June of 2008.
