Carbonrally joins gaming with cutting carbon emissions

The six governors of New England states, along with five Eastern Canadian premiers, agreed Monday to establish a goal of reducing energy use in buildings by at least 20 percent by 2020.
The meeting in Lenox was convened by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and also yielded several other agreements, according to a news release from Patrick’s office. They included adopting the highest energy-efficiency building codes and examining the possible implementation of a regional low carbon fuel standard, to reduce the carbon intensity of transportation fuels.
Separately, the New England governors agreed to petition the U.S. Department of Energy to establish a 90 percent efficiency standard for natural gas and propane furnaces in New England.
The governors also agreed to work together to promote the solar industry, by coordinating state policies and establishing a specific goal for solar installations in New England by 2020, according to the news release.
In 2008, Patrick announced a statewide goal of having 250 megawatts of solar installed by 2017. The state expects to have 60 megawatts of solar power online by the end of the year, Massachusetts officials have said.
