EMC to buy Calif. cloud computing firm

By Kyle Alspach

EMC Corp. said Tuesday it plans to acquire a California-based cloud computing software firm, which will form the basis for a new product division.

The Hopkinton-based IT giant said it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Greenplum Inc., a privately held provider of data warehousing technology.

An acquisition price was not disclosed, but EMC said it would be an all-cash transaction that is not expected to have a material impact on EMC’s earnings per share for fiscal 2010. EMC expects the acquisition to be completed in the third quarter of this year.

EMC (NYSE: EMC) said Greenplum will form the foundation of a new data computing product division within EMC’s information infrastructure business. Greenplum’s clients include Nasdaq, NYSE Euronext, Skype, T-Mobile and Fox Interactive Media, EMC said in its announcement.
