Terrafugia Inc., the Woburn-based developer of the Transition Roadable Aircraft, has announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted the company an additional 110 pounds to qualify the “flying car” as a light sport aircraft.
The exclusive weight allowance enables Terrafugia to meet the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, which include airbags, protective safety cage and an energy-absorbent crumple zone.
The aircraft weighs 1,430 pounds and is designed to provide Sport Pilot-certified pilots with a flexible transportation option that gives them a choice of flying or driving. The aircraft can be driven on public roads and parked in garages.
Terrafugia is founded by five pilots who graduated from MIT. Chief operating officer Anna Mracek Dietrich was named a Mass High Tech Woman to Watch in 2009.
The company raised $2 million in a Series B round of financing announced in May. In February, Terrafugia CEO Carl Dietrich said he was considering whether to accept an offer of $4.4 million to move into a facility in Dayton, Ohio. Discussions are ongoing.
