Cleantech incubator eyed for Boston 'innovation district'

By Kyle Alspach

The city of Boston is seeking to bring a cleantech incubator to its "innovation district" in the South Boston waterfront and Marine Industrial Park, Mayor Thomas Menino planned to announce this morning.

The facility would help to start up new cleantech companies in Boston, according to prepared remarks for an address by Menino at the Ad Club’s Edge Conference. Menino did not plan to offer specifics about the plans for the facility, according to the remarks.

Meanwhile, the city is also working with MIT and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center to get federal funding for an energy research facility that would also be located in the “innovation district,” according to the remarks. “This would be a game-changing facility that would bring together researchers from different backgrounds to create green jobs and develop new energy efficiency breakthroughs – making Boston perhaps the unquestioned center of clean tech,” Menino planned to say during the conference at the Westin Boston Waterfront hotel.

Last week, Menino announced that Boston is seeking to become the first large American city to complete an infrared scan, in order to identify heat loss from buildings.
