Springfield Data Center work begins

By James M. Connolly

State and local officials from western Massachusetts joined Gov. Deval Patrick yesterday in a ground-breaking ceremony for a $110 million data center to house state records and data systems in Springfield.

The 148,000 sq ft. facility, designed to meet standards for energy efficiency and sustainable building design, also will serve as a backup to the state’s primary data center in Chelsea. The Springfield Data Center is being built on the site of the former Technical High School, which closed in 1986 after more than 80 years, and will retain some of the facade from the school.

State officials said the facility is expected to create 70 full-time jobs and up to 200 construction jobs during the two-year construction phase.

The building is being financed through a bond bill approved in 2008.
