Boston buildings to be scanned for heat loss data

By Kyle Alspach

Mayor Thomas Menino has plans to announce today that Boston is seeking to become the first large American city to complete an infrared scan, in order to identify heat loss from buildings.

Menino was scheduled to make the announcement at the South Boston headquarters of Next Step Living Inc., a home energy service company.

The city plans to release a request for proposals for the infrared scan, which will allow the city to help residents and businesses save money through reducing heat loss.

The scan is intended to provide the city with new data that could help to enhance awareness of this loss and drive greater enrollment in utility-sponsored energy efficiency programs.

Menino was scheduled to be joined by Cape Wind Associates President Jim Gordon for the event, where Menino also planned to recognize Boston’s growing cluster of cleantech businesses.
