National Grid plans to unveil its new 1-megawatt rooftop solar installation in Central Massachusetts today, which the utility said is the largest solar generation facility in the state.
The installation is on the town line between Sutton and Northbridge and contains about 4,700 solar panels, made by Evergreen Solar Inc. in Marlborough. The project included collaboration by renewable systems integrator Nexamp of North Andover.
The installation is on the roof of National Grid’s New England Distribution Center. National Grid said it is the first utility-owned solar facility in service under the state’s Green Communities Act.
The utility plans to build four additional solar generation facilities – in Dorchester, Everett, Haverhill and Revere.
The ground-mounted installations will be located on former industrial sites and will range in size from 620 kilowatts to 1.3 megawatts, according to National Grid’s website.
National Grid’s corporate office building in Waltham, completed last year, also features a 225-kilowatt photovoltaic power generation system, which produces enough power for the building’s lighting needs.
Under state law, utilities must acquire 5 percent of their power supply from renewable sources this year, a figure set to rise by 1 percent a year.
