Newton ISP sues Google over Mass. WiFi customer privacy

By Galen Moore

A Newton Internet service provider (ISP) has joined plaintiffs on the West Coast in suing Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) on behalf of Massachusetts WiFi users whose privacy may have been violated by the Mountain View search giant’s Street View photo mapping cars.

Google last week acknowledged that its mapping cars, which take street-level images linked to online maps in the Street View feature of the company’s Google Maps service, had been collecting user data from WiFi networks they passed through along their way. The company has said the data collection was a mistake.

Carp Law Offices LLC, a firm based in Newton, announced yesterday it has filed a class-action lawsuit against Google on behalf of Galaxy Internet Services Inc., a Newton ISP, and its Bay State WiFi customers, alleging the activity amounted to “packet sniffing,” and a violation of users’ privacy.

An Oregon woman and a Washington man filed a similar suit in Portland, Ore. federal court last week.
