Microsoft expands NERD center, plans growth

By Craig M. Douglas

Microsoft Corp. has leased 113,000 square feet of space in Cambridge’s Kendall Square to expand its local research and development center, commonly referred to as NERD.

The company’s New England Research & Development Center, which launched in September 2007, will use the new space to expand its headcount and house the majority of its 500 local R&D employees. Once the build-out is complete, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) said it will shift its local advertising group and a Waltham-based development team to the new space at One Cambridge Center, which is located in Cambridge’s Kendall Square. It also will move its SharePoint Workspace team, now based in Beverly, to its current NERD headquarters at One Memorial Drive in Cambridge.

The moves are expected to be complete by the end of June.
