World Energy Solutions Inc. is expanding its energy exchange services into South America with the securing of a two-year agreement to sell carbon credits in Brazil, the company said Tuesday.
A spokesman for the Worcester-based company (NASDAQ: XWES; TSX: XWE) said World Energy will be paid a transaction fee per credit sold but said he could not provide an overall dollar figure for the deal.
The company said it expects to sell millions of carbon credits on the world Green Exchange through the deal. The credits will be generated from the preservation and restoration of Brazilian forests.
World Energy manages online exchanges for energy and green commodities, including for the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which charges power plants in New England and four other states for the right to emit carbon dioxide.
The company previously forged deals with participants in Europe, Asia, China, Australia, Canada and the Middle East, a spokesman said.
