Zipcar brings car-sharing service to Scotland

By Kyle Alspach

Zipcar Inc. is expanding its car sharing service into Scotland, the company announced Friday.

The Cambridge-based company planned to make 10 vehicles available on Friday in Edinburgh and planned to expand service into Glasgow next week. The expansion is made possible through Zipcar’s acquisition in April of Streetcar Limited, a U.K.-based car-sharing company.

“The ability to grow was a key reason to bring together Zipcar and Streetcar, and we’re pleased to add a new country to our growing global network,” said Scott Griffith, CEO of Zipcar, in a prepared statement.

Scotland is now the fourth country served by Zipcar, along with the U.S., Canada and England. Zipcar reports having more than 400,000 members and 7,000 vehicles.

Griffith was quoted by Bloomberg News last year saying that Zipcar was planning an initial public offering. The company has not filed any intentions to do this with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
