Heppelmann to become CEO at PTC

By Rodney H. Brown

Come October, Parametric Technology Corp. will add CEO to the titles held by current president and COO James E. Heppelmann. Current CEO and chairman C. Richard Harrison will become executive chairman.

In 1998, when Needham-based PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC) acquired the company Heppelmann founded, Windchill Technology, he joined PTC as a senior vice president. Heppelmann was promoted to executive vice president and named chief technical officer in June 2001, and in 2003 was named executive vice president of the software and marketing group and chief product officer.
Heppelmann was appointed to the board in 2008 and named president and COO in March 2009, when Harrison was named chairman of PTC

In February, PTC acquired environmental analysis technology company Planet Metrics Inc. for an undisclosed amount. The purchase of San Bruno, Calif.-based Planet Metrics was seen as a way to expand PTC’s Insight Product Analytics software platform by adding carbon analysis and other environmental analytics to PTC’s line of products.

Last summer, PTC bought Relex Software Corp., a Pennsylvania developer of design and field data analysis software and services.

With more than 5,200 employees globally, PTC – which makes product development and lifecycle management software – reported a $9 million profit for the first quarter of this year. That was slightly above the $7.2 million profit from the same quarter last year, but significantly off the $17.9 million profit last quarter.
