Ember hits 10M mark for ZigBee shipments

By Kyle Alspach

Wireless technology-maker Ember Corp. claimed today that it has become the first company in the world to ship more than 10 million ZigBee wireless chips, which are used in smart meters and home area network products.

The Boston-based company said the sales have been driven by large-scale deployments of smart energy technologies by utilities, device manufacturers and smart-home products.

The privately-held company said in a news release that it is “well positioned” for nearly 300 percent annual revenue growth this year.

Spun out of MIT in 2001, Ember makes the ZigBee portfolio of products, which comprises wireless software and network equipment for smart grid applications, home area networks, building automation and automatic meter reading.

As of 2006, the company had raised $65 million in venture funding from Polaris Venture Partners, GrandBanks Capital, RRE Ventures, Vulcan Capital, DFJ ePlanet Ventures, DFJ New England, WestLB Mellon Asset Management and ChevronTexaco Technology Ventures.

In January, Ember received $5 million in venture debt financing from Wellington Financial LP.
