Novell, Verizon team up on cloud security service

By Rodney H. Brown

Waltham-based open source software company Novell Inc. is teaming up with Verizon Communications Inc. to offer a security product for businesses running cloud-based applications. The Secure Access Services will be offered by Verizon and be driven by Novell’s identity and access management software.

While no financial terms of the partnership were disclosed, Novell (Nasdaq: NOVL) has also agreed that New Jersey-based Verizon (NYSE: VZ) will be the preferred provider of managed services for its identity and access management offerings. The new joint service is expected to roll out in June, according to officials.

The new cloud security services joins the one announced by Cambridge-based Akamai Technologies Inc. in December. Akamai’s Web Application Firewall is also a managed service, and the company claims it was the first cloud application security product offered.

Novell had been working on a cloud security service, and as early as February, industry watchers said it appeared ready to launch as a Novell-only product in May or June.

As of January, Novell reported 3,600 employees. For 2009, Novell reported a loss of $214 million on revenue of $862 million, but that reflected an unusual operating expense of $307 million versus 2008 expenses of $72.7 million.
