Janice Bourque joins Boston office of Hercules

By Rodney H. Brown

Area finance and life sciences veteran Janice Bourque has joined Hercules Technology Growth Capital Inc., a California-based venture investment firm with operations in Boston, as managing director in the life sciences group in the Boston office. Bourque was named a Mass High Tech All-Star in 2001.

Bourque is perhaps best known for her 12-year stint – from 1992 to 2004 – at the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, ultimately serving as its president and CEO. Bourque was the first employee of the Biotech Council when she came on board in 1992. Founded in 1985, the council had been run entirely on a volunteer basis up to that point.

Most recently, Bourque served as an advisor to Commons Capital, an early stage venture capital fund. There she provided strategic corporate investor fundraising knowledge. Bourque also supported Commons Capital and Oxford Bioscience Partners’ new joint venture, Commons Global Health Fund, which focuses on health-care investments for developing and emerging countries.

Prior to working with Commons Capital, Bourque was senior vice president and group head of East Coast life sciences at Comerica Bank, where she managed the group responsible for providing debt financing to life sciences companies. From 1986 to 1992, Bourque served as controller and CFO of Cambridge Medical Technologies and initially began her career as a senior accountant at Coopers & Lybrand. She has a bachelor’s degree and MBA from the University of New Hampshire.

Hercules Technology Growth Capital (Nasdaq: HTGC) counts among its Bay State portfolio companies NEXX Systems Inc. and Luminus Devices Inc. of Billerica, as well as Acceleron Pharma Inc. and Elixir Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Cambridge.
