DOD gives $31.6M to Belmont Instrument for blood warmers
By Mass High Tech staff
Belmont Instrument Corp. of Billerica has been awarded a $31.6 million contract by the U.S. Department of Defense for its blood fluid warming technology line of products.
According to the DOD, Belmont Instrument’s blood warmers will be put into use across all branches of the armed services – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps – as well as by federal civilian agencies. The Defense Logistics Agency, through the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia, awarded the contract, which lasts through the end of the year.
Belmont Instrument’s Buddy, Buddy plus and Buddy lite blood and fluid warmers are small heating units attached in-line with an IV, allowing them to be kept close to the patient. Some of the models can run on AC power or a supplied battery pack, and the company claims it can warm five liters of blood from 20 degrees Celsius to 38 degrees on a single battery charge.
In February, Belmont reported that the Olympic Organizing Committee asked the company to install its blood infusion product, the Belmont Rapid Infuser, at the mobile hospital that treated Olympic athletes at the Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada.
Founded in 1980, Belmont Instrument notes on its website that its products are used in 35,000 medical procedures annually, and all of its products are made at its facility in Billerica.
