Marine coatings developers win UMass innovation challenge
By Mass High Tech staff
A team of entrepreneurs that seeks to develop drag-reducing marine coatings took the top prize in Thursday’s University of Massachusetts Amherst Innovation Challenge Final Business Plan Competition. Precision Slip has won the $50,000 grand prize with its plan to produce marine coatings designed to dramatically cut fuel consumption and increase speed of boats.
The Innovation Challenge brought together teams of students, recent alumni and faculty advisors with innovation-driven business plans. The program, which includes a preliminary elevator pitch contest, and mentoring and educational events, culminated in the investor presentations by five finalists.
Second place prizes of $12,500 each went to Aha! Productions, which is developing software to help scientists and engineers to innovate; and Localocracy, an online platform designed to help citizens learn about local issues, make decisions and impact their government.
The Innovation Challenge is an initiative of the Isenberg Program for the Integration of Management, Engineering and Science as a cross-campus collaboration of the College of Engineering, College of Natural Sciences, the Isenberg School of Management and the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement at UMass Amherst.
