Snapshots of some key tech events in Boston in 2010

By Bridget Botelho, Special to Mass High Tech

This year marks the start of what shapes up as a three-year high for meetings and conventions in Massachusetts, thanks in large part to technology industry events booked in and around Boston.

The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) predicts $447.15 million in economic impact from all events this year, $381.33 million in 2011 and $417.82 in 2012. Though the MCCA didn’t have specific data on how much of an impact tech-specific events will bring in, officials say the contribution is significant. As a major technology center, the Boston area attracts industries on a global basis, said James E. Rooney, executive director, MCAA. “In Boston, not only can you talk to EMC or Harmonix about the next big thing, but experts from MIT’s Media Lab can also tell you about the next, next big thing,” Rooney said. “Few cities in the world can provide this level of expertise.”

Here are some of the biggest technology industry events happening in and around Boston for the year ahead, in order by date:

 • BIOMEDevice’s Exposition and Executive Forum will be at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center April 21 to 22.

This event for biotechnology, medical device, in vitro diagnostics, and pharmaceutical industry companies will attract an estimated 5,000 attendees, including industry players involved in investing, partnering, licensing, and developing business opportunities in the health care product market. The keynote addresses on April 21 include “Disruptive Innovation Solutions,” “Enabling Health care Solutions” and “Converging on Innovation” and the April 22 keynotes include “Integration of Therapeutics and Diagnostics: Lessons Learned from the Front Line” and “Positioning for Profitability.” All keynotes are followed by related panel discussions. Attendees can register free online at http://www.devicelink.com/expo/bioboston10/ or pay $45 for tickets on-site.

 • The MIT Sustainability Summit 2010 is being held at the Microsoft New England R&D Center (NERD), One Memorial Drive, Cambridge, on April 23 from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm.

The second annual event for companies, students and professionals interested in social responsibility will attract over 250 attendees who will learn innovative methods for advancing social responsibility efforts including green business practices, marketing and sustainability issues. Tickets are $20 for MIT students; $50 for MIT alumni, faculty, and staff; $75 for non-profit and government professionals; and $125 for industry and business professionals.

The keynote address on April 29, titled “The Role of HIT in Health Care Reform,” will be presented by the U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. The agenda also includes a panel discussion on developing HIT strategies and policies, jobs, and other health-care IT industry topics.

 • One of the Massachusetts’s Technology Leadership Council’s most popular annual events is its unConference, which this year will take place twice — in June and in October, each of which is expected to attract about 400 people.

Agenda information is unavailable of course, because the agendas for unConferences are developed the day of the event by attendees. The council’s unConference events typically consist of small, interactive sessions on issues around driving innovation and success in business and technology in Massachusetts.
