PerkinElmer to buy Washington genetic testing firm

By Mass High Tech staff

Waltham-based lab and research gear provider PerkinElmer Inc. has announced that it plans to acquire Spokane, Wash.-based diagnostic genetic testing firm Signature Genomic Laboratories LLC.

The acquired company was the first laboratory to provide microarray-based diagnostic testing of individuals with developmental disabilities. Founded in 2003 and currently employing about 120 people, Signature Genomic uses its microarray diagnostic technology to identify DNA changes associated with genetic disease. PerkinElmer officials noted that the addition of Signature Genomic will help the former grow and strengthen its molecular diagnostics, cancer diagnostics and genetic testing service businesses.

The acquisition deal is expected to close in May. No financial terms of the deal have been disclosed.

In February, PerkinElmer (NYSE: PKI) agreed to buy out Washington D.C.-based partner Danaher Corp.’s share of a joint venture in the mass spectrometry business, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), originally part of Danaher’s acquisition of MDS Inc.’s Analytics Technologies business.

In September, PerkinElmer announced it had expanded its prenatal and neonatal diagnostic offerings globally by acquiring Shanghai-based diagnostics supplier SYM-BIO Lifescience for about $63.7 million.
