Venture capital investors put $5.9 billion to work across 731 financing deals with U.S. startups in the first quarter of 2010, industry tracker CB Insights reports today.
Nationwide, the activity represents a rebound from the dismal $3.9 billion over 483 deals CB recorded in the first quarter of 2009 – a 50 percent increase over the year-ago period, according to the CB Insights Venture Capital Activity Report.
The report noted Massachusetts and New York have posted gains against venture activity in California. Massachusetts’ share of venture dollars has steadily increased over the past four quarters, up to 15 percent from the 9 percent Bay State companies drew in venture investment in Q2 2009. Meanwhile, California’s share of deals and dollars have slipped.
New York-based CB Insights, formerly known as Chubby Brain, tracks filing data from federal and state regulatory filings, direct confirmation and press release, according to the company’s methodology information.
Dow Jones VentureSource is expected to publish its first-quarter 2010 report this Saturday.
