By Mass High Tech staff
American Superconductor Corp. furthers its reach into the Asian markets with a $20 million initial order for electrical control systems wind turbines from India’s Ghodawat Energy Pvt. Ltd. Devens-based AMSC will start shipping parts under the deal in the middle of this year, officials said.
Ghodawat operates wind turbine farms in four states in India. The company, which is the renewable energy arm of Sanjay Ghodawat Group, runs more than 150 wind turbines that produce more than 100 megawatts of electricity. Ghodawat also has a wind turbine tower manufacturing facility, Shrenik Industries Pvt. Ltd. That unit has started manufacturing full 1.65 MW wind turbines that were designed by and licensed from AMSC’s subsidiary AMSC Windtec. The two companies signed the licensing deal in 2008.
AMSC (Nasdaq: AMSC) says it should complete all shipments to Ghodawat by no later than the end of 2013.
Last month, AMSC landed $10 million from CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co. Ltd., under which it will supply CSR with components for 1.65-megawatt wind turbines designed by AMSC’s Windtec subsidiary.
The Ghodawat order is the fourth such order for AMSC this year. In February, AMSC won a $70 million initial order from Shenyang Blower Works (Group) Co. Ltd. for full wind turbine electrical control systems. In January, Chinese manufacturer XJ Group Corp. ordered 100 sets of wind turbine electrical components.
