Wind informatics startup blows in $1M funding

By Mass High Tech staff

Lexington-based wind power informatics startup Windpole Ventures reports it has raised $1 million in capital, comprising a $500,000 round of equity financing and a $500,000 loan from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MCEC).

The startup, which collects data from about 6,000 tall (260 feet and higher) wind towers in 39 states, received the funding round from James Lang, the former president and COO of Cambridge Energy Research Associates. The MCEC matched the funding with a $500,000 convertible loan.

The startup said it plans to use the funding to expand the coverage of its real-time tower data network. Windpole plans to cover 580 more towers in the next year and a half, the company said.

In 2008, Windpole’s CEO, Steve Kropper, was a member of the New England Clean Energy Council’s first class of Clean Energy Fellows.
