Women to Watch honorees continue to shine in community activity
By Mass High Tech staff
One of the considerations in the selection of the Mass High Tech Women to Watch each year is how active the nominees are in their community and in mentoring younger generations.
Here are some examples of how this year’s honorees give back:
Livia Racz
Livia Racz of Draper Labs is an invited speaker for the Tufts University chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and her work there has inspired five students to join Draper as members of the technical staff.
She volunteers in a variety of capacities for the Bartok Bela Hungarian School of Boston, teaching beginning Hungarian, and in addition teaching children in a bilingual education program by speaking Hungarian exclusively to them.
Lauren Crews
Raytheon’s Lauren Crews has organized events for SWE, and reaches out to junior high-age girls, working to drive interest in science and technology. She also gave a talk on “10 Things You Should Know About Earning a PhD” for high school students participating in Raytheon’s “Stand and Deliver” Mentoring program.
Catherine Crawford
IBM’s Catherine Crawford coaches her 9-year-old daughter’s soccer team. However, she and her co-coach take their responsibilities beyond the soccer fields. They work to interest the girls in possible careers in science and technology by scheduling visits to tech centers such as an IBM research lab and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute as part of road trips to soccer tournaments.
Jill Drury
MITRE’s Jill Drury also is a SWE organizer, and has been an organizer and speaker at conferences focusing on human-robotic interaction.
Michelle Dipp
GSK’s Michelle Dipp is a member of the American Diabetes Association Greater Boston Leadership Council, a member of the board of directors for Roxbury’s City on a Hill Charter School and president of the nonprofit Healthy Lifespan Institute.
Candace Fleming
Candace Fleming of Crimson Hexagon works with The Second Step, a program that supports women and children in their efforts to leave abusive relationships and to go out on their own.
A.G. Breitenstein
A.G. Breitenstein of Humedica was the primary drafter of the Massachusetts Act to Protect the Privacy of Medical Records and has been an expert resource regarding health data privacy.
Katie Hall
WiTricity’s Katie Hall has served on the board of directors of the Optical Society of America and the Board of Governors of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society.
