Raytheon Co. reports one of its engineers, Alex Sanchez, has been appointed to the Massachusetts Governor’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Advisory Council.
Sanchez, a senior principal systems engineer working at Tewksbury-based Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, has conducted research on education and has spoken on the subject at conferences, according to Raytheon. He was also involved in a Raytheon partnership with the Business-Higher Education Forum to create a model for education that emphasizes the importance of STEM education. Sanchez works for Raytheon IDS’ Mission Innovation group, which applies the company’s expertise to areas outside Raytheon’s traditional core business interests in defense, homeland security and government markets.
Last month, Worcester Polytechnic Institute president Dennis Berkey was appointed to the Council.
The Council was established in October. The council is intended to work with families, educators and community leaders to promote STEM disciplines as a path to success for individual students. The Council plans to increase the number of STEM-related programs in Massachusetts schools and help create a statewide plan to promote STEM education.
Lt. Gov. Tim Murray chairs the advisory Council.
