Boston Housing Authority lands $63M energy efficiency upgrades
By Mass High Tech staff
The city of Boston reports Boston Housing Authority buildings will receive $63 million in energy efficiency improvements.
As part of the plan, the city will partner with Framingham-based energy services company Ameresco Inc., which will design water and energy conservation systems for about 4,300 apartments at 13 developments. The city said the efforts would save the BHA more than $50 million in energy costs over the next 20 years, reduce carbon emissions by 13,000 tons a year, and create 600 union jobs. Ameresco will receive a portion of the cost savings, according to the city.
The plan includes installing co-generation and photovoltaic electric systems, reflective “cool” roof membranes, replacing water closets, showerheads and faucet aerators, installing energy efficient lighting, converting electric heat to gas, upgrading or replacing central heating plants, installing fiberglass windows, and training residents.
A roof replacement at Lenox St. will also be funded by $1.6 million in funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Mayor Thomas Menino announced the plan yesterday at the Bromley-Heath Public Housing Development in Jamaica Plain.
