WPI lands grant to study radio wave impact on humans

By Brendan Lynch

Worcester Polytechnic Institute reports it has brought in $1.2 million stimulus grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology to study the effect of radio waves on the human body.

Under the three-year American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant, WPI will conduct a study to speed up the development of body area networks (BAN), wireless networks that could help monitor the function of implanted devices or help perform virtual endoscopic exams, the college said. BANs are comprised of sensors that can be worn, or implanted or ingested into the body.

The research will be led by Kaveh Pahlavan, professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of WPI’s Center for Wireless Information Network Studies.

The grant is one of 27 projects that got funded out of 1,300 proposals, according to WPI.

WPI announced on Wednesday the appointment of its first-ever academic dean, Mark Rice. Rice will be in charge of turning WPI’s Department of Management into a full-fledged business school. Rice succeeds McRae Banks who has led WPI’s Department of Management for the past 15 years.
