Boston iPhone app, GIS Data Hub win tech awards
By Mass High Tech staff
The city of Boston is being recognized for its technology advancements. Mayor Tom Menino announced Tuesday that the Public Technology Institute (PTI) pulled won two technology awards — one in the web and e-government category and one in the GIS category.
The city’s Citizens Connect iPhone application won the web and e-government category. The application enables users to send pictures of problems around the city, such as potholes and street lighting issues, directly to city departments. To date, 5,119 Boston residents have downloaded the Citizens Connect application from the Apple iTunes store.
The winning Geospatial Information Systems technology is the city’s GIS Data Hub, which launched in August 2009 and gives city employees and residents the ability to access maps, charts and reports with geographic data layers. While employees use the GIS Data Hub for downloading data, Boston residents can use it to view and download city data — such as maps of Boston, GIS layers or reported service issues from community members.
