Maine bio lab plans $4.5M expansion
By Mass High Tech staff
The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Salisbury Cove, Maine, plans to add to its research space in a $4.5 million expansion, according to published reports. The Mount Desert Islander said that documents submitted with the planning department shows that the expansion will be an addition to the facility’s Marshall Laboratory.
According to reports, nearly 7,000 square feet of lab space will be added as part of the expansion. The extra space would allow MDIBL to add up to 12 more researchers, which would bring the count at the lab to 60 people, the report stated.
The Marshall Laboratory, which was rededicated in 2008 after extensive renovations brought it to the status of a LEED gold-certified facility, is a 15,000 square foot laboratory building. The new wing of the Marshall lab will also be built using green standards to try to become LEED certified.
The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory was founded in 1898 as the Tufts Summer School of Biology at South Harpswell, Maine, the lab’s website states. Last year the lab hired Kevin Strange of Vanderbilt University to serve as the first full-time, year-round director in its 111-year history. The laboratory focuses on research in regenerative biology and medicine, cellular and molecular physiology and environmental sciences.
