The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and FORMA Therapeutics Inc., have announced they will team up to try to develop drug candidates against a promising lymphoma target.
This new collaboration expands upon a partnership formed between New York-based LLS and Cambridge-based FORMA in July 2009. The alliance is part of the society’s Therapy Acceleration Program, whereby it directs multi-year funding to companies it believes have promising near-term therapies for blood cancers.
The partnership centers around trying to find a potential treatment that can work against B lymphocyte cells, an important component of the body’s immune system, that can become cancerous. According to LLS, approximately 85 percent of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas originate from B cells.
“With their oncology focus and unique drug discovery platform, FORMA has become an excellent partner for LLS. Together LLS and FORMA hope to change the standard of care and improve the quality of life for patients suffering from blood cancer,” said LLS CEO John Walter, in a statement.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
