FDA OKs Boston Scientific heart stent

By Julie M. Donnelly

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new Boston Scientific Corp. heart stent system that company officials said is the first of its kind to be approved for improving bloodflow to the legs.

The Natick-based medical device company’s Express LD Iliac Premounted Stent System is a balloon-expandable stent approved for use in treating iliac artery disease. Boston Scientific officials said the company plans to launch the product immediately in the U.S.

Atherosclerotic iliac disease occurs when plaque builds within the arteries that supply blood to the legs. Symptoms include poor blood flow, leg pain and other complications.

The stent system is already approved for other uses in the U.S. and it is approved for iliac artery disease in Europe.

Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX) announced last month that it had plans to restructure the company through a series of moves that will include cutting between 1,000 and 1,300 jobs, or 8 to 10 percent of the company’s global work force.
