UMass notches record research spending year
By Mass High Tech staff
The University of Massachusetts has hit a record high in spending $489.1 million on research endeavors in Fiscal Year 2009, according to president Jack Wilson.
In the previous fiscal year, UMass spent $435 million on research expenditures — representing a 12.4 percent increase in one year.
“The University of Massachusetts is being recognized as a major force in the world of research, as evidenced by the millions of dollars in research funding that is pouring into all five of our campuses,” Wilson said in a prepared statement.
A UMass report notes that the university’s research spending has grown at a rate faster than the national average, which had 5.2 percent growth from Fiscal Year 2008 to Fiscal Year 2009. In a five-year span from Fiscal Year 2003 to Fiscal Year 2008, UMass grew its research spending by 34 percent, while the national average noted 23 percent growth in research expenditures.
UMass ranks third in the state, and fourth in New England, for research activity, according to the university. Science and engineering garnered 95.8 percent of UMass’ funded research, while within that category, the life sciences took in 56 percent of the funding.
On a per-school basis, UMass Amherst spent $160.7 million; UMass Boston spent $47 million; UMass Dartmouth spent $20.7 million; UMass Lowell spent $56.7 million; and UMass Medical School in Worcester spent $204 million.
