Ischemix moves prevention drug to Phase 2a trials
By Mass High Tech staff
Maynard biotechnology firm Ischemix LLC has begun a Phase 2a trial of its cardio-protective drug, CMX-2043.
The drug candidate is intended to prevent peri-operative ischemia-reperfusion injury, a temporary increase in insufficient blood flow, in patients following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures that are meant to treat those symptoms.
The Phase 2a trial will test the safety of an injection of CMX-2043 by measuring biomarkers of cardiac damage. The trial will also evaluate the efficacy of the drug candidate as seen through electrocardiographic and cardiac biomarker monitoring.
If approved, CMX-2043 would become the first treatment to protect against ischemia-reperfusion injury, according to Ischemix CEO Robert ‘Duffy’ DuFresne.
Ischemix was established from research conducted at MIT and Harvard University. Dufresne was appointed CEO last year after serving as a member of the board of directors since May 2007.
