3Com Corp. has landed a deal to supply networking equipment to the school systems of Australia’s Northern Territory. While officials didn’t disclose financial details of the deal, they did say it was a multimillion-dollar contract that would run three years.
The Department of Education and Training in Northern Territory will get Marlborough-based 3Com’s H3C enterprise networking products under the deal to help build out its wireless and networking plans for unified communications and multimedia learning. The 187 schools across the territory includes 43,000 students and 5,000 staff.
In addition to the hardware, 3Com (Nasdaq: COMS) will include maintenance for each of the schools and training for staff at four key NT locations — Alice Springs, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Darwin.
In November, 3Com agreed to be acquired by Hewlett Packard Co. for approximately $2.7 billion in cash. 3Com, which has 5,800 employees globally, posted revenue of $290.5 million and $7.5 million in net profit in the third quarter of 2009, a year-over-year drop of 15 percent and 91 percent respectively.
3Com operates three global product and solutions brands: H3C, 3Com and TippingPoint. The company was founded by Robert Metcalfe, the inventor of the Ethernet, who is now a general partner with Polaris Venture Partners.
