Springfield awarded $500K for energy efficiency programs

By Mass High Tech staff

The city of Springfield is expected to become greener with its $491,067 Climate Showcase Community Grant, awarded to the city by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today. City officials said in a press release that the grant will support efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and, in the long term, create an Energy Conservation Corps that will support the effort.

The grant will support energy efficiency measures found in energy audits at 52 schools, 38 municipal buildings and 15 parks buildings in Springfield. Additionally, the Climate Showcase Grant will be supplemented with an existing Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant to replace five standard boilers with high-efficiency ones, energy management systems and solar thermal panels.

The energy efficiency measures are expected to lower greenhouse gas emissions by up to 8 percent in two years — about equal to removing 694 cars from the road for one year.

The EPA awarded 25 grants nationwide through a $10 million competitive grant program to bring climate change initiatives to local and tribal governments.
