Local techs lending a hand

BackOffice Associates gives $15K to Lower Cape Outreach Council

BackOffice Associates LLC of South Harwich has made a $15,720 donation to the Lower Cape Outreach Council. The donation was raised through a BackOffice employee donation program. BackOffice Associates co-founders Tom and Trish Kennedy have season tickets to the Boston Red Sox and knew they would not be able to attend all 81 home games. Under the donation program, employees were offered tickets to home games provided they make a donation to the Lower Cape Outreach Council. The mission of the Lower Cape Outreach Council is to provide emergency assistance of food, clothing and financial support to individuals and families in Brewster, Chatham, Eastham, Harwich, Orleans, Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet. BackOffice Associates provides data migration and data governance solutions in support of SAP solutions for global customers.


First Wind gives out its first scholarship award

Boston’s First Wind has named Kelsey Mitchell, a senior at Millard High School in Fillmore, Utah, as the first recipient of its First Wind Scholars program. Launched in October 2009, First Wind Scholars is designed to support local high school students that display strong potential for a successful college experience, as well as interest in the environment, energy or the sciences. Mitchell will receive a $3,000 scholarship that she can apply toward her tuition at Southern Utah University, where she will begin her studies in Forensic Science this fall. Mitchell was selected based on a number of factors, including: academic performance, standardized test scores, community service activity and a 300-word essay. Millard and Beaver counties in Utah are the home of First Winds Milford Wind Corridor project which features 97 total wind turbines, and resulted in more than $85 million in economic benefit to Utah.



Verizon doled out more than $3.5M in 2009 to Mass. nonprofits

Nearly 1,300 nonprofit groups in Massachusetts received more than $3.5 million from the Verizon Foundation in 2009, enabling these organizations to improve literacy skills, enhance educational opportunities for children, and assist domestic violence survivors. In addition, Verizon employees volunteered nearly 46,000 hours to nonprofit groups throughout the state in 2009. Some of the awards included: i-Safe America, which got $75,000 to provide Internet safety workshops for students, parents, teachers and law enforcement officials that help students to remain safe online; and Think Ahead with Thinkfinity Awards, in which 15 public schools that are using Thinkfinity.org to improve student achievement were awarded a total of $150,000 in grants.


InnoCentive, GlobalGiving, Rockefeller Foundation team up on water issues

InnoCentive Inc. of Waltham is partnering with GlobalGiving and the Rockefeller Foundation to help several GlobalGiving partner organizations find solutions to water-related problems facing their local communities. Using InnoCentive’s platform, these organizations have combined efforts to crowdsource not only challenge questions and their solutions, but also the funding to implement the winning solutions. Through the partnership, GlobalGiving generated a pool of challenge submissions by crowdsourcing ideas from  800 project leaders representing 80 countries.



Formatech donates over $300K through “Fillanthropy” program

Formatech Inc. continued its pledge to make a difference in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical community with its Fillanthropy Program. Since the program’s inception, Andover’s Formatech has donated $308K in aseptic liquid fill and finish manufacturing services to companies developing new drug therapies. Introduced in August, Formatech’s Fillanthropy Program has awarded fills to GeoVax Labs for their HIV/AIDS vaccine, KAI Pharmaceuticals for their secondary hyperparathyroidism treatment and most recently to ViroMed for their vaccine targeting breast cancer. Each month, Formatech is donating the services required to aseptically fill and finish one lot of drug product for selected therapeutic candidates that are entering human clinical trials. 



OneSimCard donates cell service to Red Cross in Haiti

OneSimCard of Boston has made a donation to the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay in response to the earthquakes in Haiti. The company is providing international cell phone service for Relief Emergency Response Units being deployed to Haiti. OneSimCard, a division of Long Distance Post LLC, provides international cell phone service in 180 countries with its universal international SIM card. That card enables owners of GSM phones to make and receive calls abroad without roaming fees.
