OurStage, MTV to shine light on new music
By Mass High Tech staff
Chelmsford-based OurStage Inc. reports it has partnered with MTV Networks Co., with the startup providing its voting platform for emerging musical acts.
Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed. Under the deal, the two companies plan to find and promote new artists using OurStage’s voting platform. MTV plans to spotlight a new artist in a weekly feature called “Needle in the Haystack.” The artist will be interviewed by MTV bloggers, promoted by MTV house ads on their cable channels, and through MTV’s social media efforts. The artists could also get their music played on MTC shows such as “Parental Control,” and “Get Hired.”
MTV Networks said it plans to use OurStage’s platform for a pair of competitions. MTV will stage a competition offering artists on OurStage the chance to be featured on a show called “$5 Cover.” Country music channel CMT also plans to use OurStage’s platform for its Music City Madness Competition, a new artist contest.
The partnership was announced by MTV Networks Music Group president Van Toffler at the Billboard Music & Money Symposium in New York yesterday.
OurStage, launched in 2006, landed $3 million of a $6 million round of financing in July. The company received $17 million from 103 angel investors in 2008.
