Covidien advances marketing of oxygen and pain products
By Mass High Tech staff
Medical device maker Covidien has announced a pair of marketing moves on different products, one through a partnership and a second in bringing a treatment to the retail market.
Covidien (NYSE: COV), based in Ireland but with its U.S. headquarters in Mansfield, announced a long-term, preferred vendor partnership with the Order of Saint Francis (OSF) Healthcare System, headquartered in Peoria, Ill., with OSF Healthcare standardizing on Covidien’s OxiMax technology for pulse oximetry — a non-invasive monitoring of blood oxygen content. OSF Healthcare operates nine health facilities.
Covidien also announced that Mallinckrodt Inc., a Covidien company, has launched its Oral Transmucosal Fentanyl Citrate (CII) to distributors serving retail pharmacies across the country. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Oral Transmucosal Fentanyl Citrate (CII) on October 30. The product is expected to be available at retail pharmacies in the next few weeks.
The product is a generic alternative to the branded ACTIQ. It is a solid formulation of fentanyl that resembles a lozenge on a handle. Covidien said that Oral Transmucosal Fentanyl Citrate, a Class II controlled substance, is an opioid analgesic indicated only for the management of breakthrough cancer pain in patients 16 years of age and older with malignancies.
