By Brendan Lynch

The Maine Technology Institutes reports it has awarded $2.2 million in grants to seven Pine Tree State technology companies.

The MTI gives out “Development Awards” of up to $500,000 three times a year. This is the 25th round of the grants the organization has given out. The funds are intended to help tech startups with prototype development and testing, patent applications, small scale manufacturing and scaling up for manufacturing with limited production. The application deadline for the next round of awards is June 7, 2010.

The following seven companies received funding:

• Sea and Reef Aquaculture LLC, Orono: $200,000 for research on the commercialization of marine ornamental fish.

• Pondera Pharmaceuticals Inc., Pownal: $50,000 to complete a trial design of a combination of ultra-low-dose drugs intended to enhance the pain-relieving properties of endorphins. Funding will also go toward getting approval from a University of New England School of Pharmacy Institution Review Board and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

• Harbor Technologies LLC, Brunswick: $400,000 to commercialize a hybrid-composite bridge system intended to combine the durability and flexibility of a composite stay-in-place form with the low-cost and functional advantages of concrete and steel.

• Kenway Corp.: $500,000 to develop its Temperature Control Molding process for shaped tooling.

• ORPC Maine LLC, Portland: ORPC, a subsidiary of Portland-based Ocean Renewable Power Co. LLC, plans to use the award to accelerate production of its OCGen model for tidal energy from a pre-commercial phase to commercial production.

• Kepware Technologies, Portland: $500,000 to design a software product and hire six students from the University of Maine’s Electrical Engineering program.
