Jack Wilson to resign as president of UMass
By Mass High Tech staff
President of the University of Massachusetts Jack Wilson announced today that he will resign at the end of his term, concluding June 30, 2011.
Wilson, 64, has headed the UMass system from Sept. 2, 2003, focusing his efforts on student education accessibility, research and innovation, and renovations and new facilities at all five campuses. In a press release from UMass, he said that his plans for post-presidency work have not yet been decided, but he would like to work with students emphasizing technology and innovation, whether as part of the UMass system or not. “At my core, I am an educator, and I look forward to being able to focus on teaching and to advancing research. I feel that it will soon be time to open a new chapter in my career,” he said.
Wilson, a physicist, entrepreneur and educator, joined UMass in 2001 as the founding CEO of UMassOnline, the school’s distance-learning program that has grown almost 700 percent in enrollment with revenue growing from $3 million to $47 million.
Among the university’s achievements during his tenure, Wilson noted that the UMass system this year managed to meet 93 percent of the students’ “demonstrated financial need.” In a five-year period from fiscal 2003 to fiscal 2008, UMass saw research funding grow by more than $100 million.
