PerkinElmer acquires partner's mass spectrometry unit
By Julie M. Donnelly
PerkinElmer has announced it has agreed to buy out Washington D.C.-based partner Danaher Corp.’s share of a joint venture in the mass spectrometry business, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), originally part of Danaher’s acquisition of MDS Inc.’s Analytics Technologies business.
The move is designed to better the competitive position of the Waltham-based human and environmental health company, versus its competitors, which include local companies Bruker and Thermo Fisher Scientific.
Mass spectrometers are used in a number of health-related indications, including separating parts of substances to check for food, medication and drink safety. Mass spectrometry is also used in drug development.
John Roush, president of environmental health, PerkinElmer, touted the company’s newly bought out ICP-MS unit for providing analysis and solutions to toxic elements that pose potential safety threats.
