MIT takes lead role in $25M bio research project
By Mass High Tech staff
MIT and two other schools, along with several minority-focused institutions, plan to establish a research center, based at MIT, that will help engineers create sophisticated, multi-cell systems or machines. The Emergent Behaviors of Integrated Cellular systems Center (EBICS), funded with a $25 million grant from the National Science Foundation, will bring together researchers from MIT, Georgia Tech and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
According to MIT, research will focus on developing a better understanding of the properties and mechanisms of cells and the collective behavior of cell clusters. Researchers will then work to create increasingly complex cellular machines that perform specific functions, opening up new possibilities in terms of regenerative medicine and developmental biology.
The center will work with faculty from “minority-serving institutions,” according to MIT, to ensure the broadest range of participation from a diverse population.
